Things To Look For In A Wedding Photographer

Things To Look For In A Wedding Photographer

Shopping for a wedding photographer is not the same as selecting your wedding dress or bridal bouquet… you can’t see the pictures until after your wedding.

For many too often, price ends up being the primary deciding factor, which isn’t always the best decision as there are no second chances.

Your wedding memories will be captured through the eyes, heart and talent of your wedding photographer… remember the old adage ” you get what you pay for!”.

Some guidelines to help you select the photographer that is right for you….

Examine the photographer’s work carefully…take note of the little things:

do the photos or album tell a story of the entire wedding day or just a series of pictures?
is there a good mixture of portraits and groups?
has the photographer captured facial expressions well?
do the photos capture the detail of the faces and dresses, or is there too much background detail?

Uncle “BOB”

You wouldn’t ask your aunt to make you a wedding dress just because she has a great sewing machine. You wouldn’t let your co-worker bake your wedding cake just because she has a new oven. It takes more then just having the latest and greatest equipment to make a beautiful dress or an amazing cake. Thats why I am always amazed when a bride and groom tell me they have decided to let a friend or relative take their wedding pictures just because they have bought the greatest new consumer camera. In the wedding Industry we call that person uncle “Bob”. They may mean well and are trying to help, but there is so much more that goes into shooting a wedding then just snapping pictures. If they are a professional photographer then good for you, you scored. But the idea of trusting some one to capture all the emotion and feelings of one of the biggest days in your life simply because they have a camera and like to take pictures of flowers or what ever on the weekends seems like a big risk to me. When the wedding is all over and the wedding dress is in the attic, the cake top is in the freezer all you have is your pictures. 30 years from now when you want to show your grandkids your wedding you want to be proud of what you have and you want the pictures to take you back to that day like it was yesterday.

Why I became a wedding photographer

I entered photography school with the aspiration of becoming a photojournalist. I dreamed of traveling the world and documenting history and news events as they happened. As I made my way through the photojournalism program I began to realize that most people didn’t care about seeing what was happening in the world. I wanted to take pictures that moved and touched people, and being a news photographer these days just didn’t offer that.  Around that same time a family friend asked me if I would shoot their daughters wedding. I hesitantly agreed, because in photography school being a wedding photographer was kind of joke. But I decided to do it anyway and it turned out  to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

For me being a wedding photographer is more  then just taking pictures. Its capturing history, and moments that would other wise be lost in time. I thrive on capturing  all the special little moments which say so much.  For me those brief little candid moments in time say so much more then posed formal shots.

The picture on the left is a posed formal shot. Most people when told to pose for a picture become nervous, stiff, awkward, and don’t portrait much emotion. From that picture you can’t tell if their best friends or just acquaintances. The picture on the right was candid moment and it portraits so much more emotion. I get the feeling that they are good friends happy to be sharing this wonderful day with each other.

Of course as a wedding photographer you still have to do the posed traditional formal shots. I try to limit the posed shots to about 10 percent of the pictures taken and I try to make the posed shots visually different.

20 questions to ask your wedding photographer answered by Jonah Joyner Photography

Friendship
1.What’s your primary style? Posed & formal, relaxed, photojournalistic, candid, traditional?  My style is mostly photojournalistic mixed with a little traditional. My training is in photojournalism so thats where my heart lies.

2.Do you shoot in color or black and white? Thats the great thing about shooting digital, color images can be made black white very easily. My packages usually consist of mostly color with some black and white and some sepia tone.

3.Do you use an assistant? Is there an extra charge for this? My wife assist me when I feel one is needed. There is a small fee for having an assistant.

4.Will you have backup equipment available? And what happens if you get ill? I carry 2 digital camera bodies and 3 lenses with me at all times. The likely hood of both cameras malfunction on the same day is slim. If for some reason I am to sick an unable to attend your wedding I do work with  other photographers who can fill in if they are not already booked for that day. Let me stress that I know how important this day is to a bride and groom, I would have to be deathly ill not to be there.

5.Can other people take photos while you are taking photos? During the candid shots I have no problem with other people taking pictures, all I ask is that during the formal setup posses people restrain from taking pictures until Im done. When too many people are taking pictures of a group of people, often times people are not sure witch camera to look at, so you get a group shot with some people looking at my camera and others looking elsewhere.

6.What types of photos will be taken (B/W, Color, Antiques, etc..)? Like I said in question #2. Most images are color with some black and white and some sepia tone.

7.How many photos come in each package? Depending on the size of the wedding and the length of the reception I usually take around 1500 pictures. You will be given at least 400 images that have been edited and are high resolution saved onto 3 DVD’s.

8.Will you accept a list of specific photos to be taken I am fully open to any ideas and suggestion for specific photos you want. The more input you have, the easier it is for me to get a feel for what you like and don’t like. I shot a wedding a few years ago where the groom brought in a picture from his parents wedding and we re-staged it using the bride and groom.

9.What attire will you and/or assistants wear? I usually wear a shirt and tie with dress pants. I try not to wear a jacket because I get hot when shooting. If your wedding is a theme wedding I am all for dressing the part.

10.What time will you arrive and how long will you stay? I offer 3 different time packages. 6 hours, 8 hours, and all day. It all depends on your wedding.

11.Should the event last longer than scheduled, will you stay? Extra charge? I would never think about leaving before the wedding is over. If it’s 30 minutes over or so no big deal. I want to make sure I capture every moment. If we need a few hours more there will an extra charge. Its $50.00 an hour extra.

12.How long after the event will the proofs be ready? About two weeks. I try to get them done as fast as possible without rushing them. I want them to be right.

13.Do you have liability insurance? Yes, I am fully covered.

14.What type and how much assistance will your provide in planning an album? I do the entire album myself, I don’t pay any outside company to design it. I feel that an outsider who wasn’t at the wedding would not be able to capture the feeling and the mood of the wedding. I have sample albums you can look at.

15.Do we get the image files? You get at least 400 high res edited digital files with permission to print.

16.Is this your recent work that I’m seeing on your website? Yes the majority of the pictures on my website were taken last year (2010).

17.Do you provide a written contract and guarantee? If you decide to go with me, a contract is signed by you and I stating all the terms.

18.How much is the deposit? When is the remaining balance after deposit due? The deposit is 25 % of the package. The remaining balance is due the day of the wedding.

19.Are there any additional charges not mentioned? (i.e. travel) There are no additional charges that will magically show up. I travel 200 miles before charging a travel fee. Any other fees would have been discussed before the contract was signed. (i.e. assistant, travel fee)

20.What are the refunds/cancellation terms?

RESERVATION DEPOSIT & PAYMENT SCHEDULE:                                                                                                      Upon signature, the Photographer (Jonah Joyner) reserves the time and date agreed upon, and will not make other reservations for that time and date. For this reason, the Reservation Deposit of 25% is non-refundable, even if date is changed or wedding cancelled for any reason, including acts of God, fire, strike and extreme weather. Reservation Deposit is to be paid at time of parties signing this contract. Reservation Deposit is applied towards the contracted wedding photographypackage upon completion of this Contract. Client understands and agrees that the entire amount owed for the wedding package described in this Contract is due on, or before the wedding day. *(No pictures will be taken until paid)

Knowing Your Venue

The first wedding I did in Charlotte after moving here from Los Angeles was at a small dark church. I was amazed when I was told that there was no flash photography allowed during the ceremony. That was unheard of to me. I was even more amazed when I realized that the bride had no idea that flash photography was prohibited. Over the last 5 years I have found that many of the brides who contact me have no idea what the church or minister allows for photography during the ceremony. Usually they are given a sheet that expalins the photography rules at the time they reserve a venue, but most don’t read it or understand what it means for the photographer.
One of the first questions I ask potential clients is if they know if flash is allowed and what other restrictions there are for the photographer.

My advice, know your venue.
